Silk Rug Cleaning Service in NYC

Silk rugs are not regular rugs. One wrong shampoo, one harsh chemical, one rough scrub and you watch a $5,000 piece turn into a stiff, faded mess. That is why we built our silk cleaning process around the fiber itself. We are Green Choice Carpet Cleaning NYC, a local family run shop on West 42nd Street, and we have been hand washing silk rugs for New Yorkers across all five boroughs and Long Island for years.

About Us Form

Why Silk Rugs Need a Cleaning Method of Their Own

Silk is a protein fiber, the same family as your hair. It reacts to water, heat and pH the way your hair reacts to bleach. Most carpet cleaners use the same machine for wool, nylon and silk, and that is how rugs get ruined. Our process treats silk like silk. We hand wash, we dry flat, we groom every fringe by hand. That is the reason people ship rugs to us from across the city.

Silk Holds Dye Loosely

Cheap chemicals pull color straight out of silk. Reds bleed into ivory in minutes. We use a dye locking pre rinse first, every single time, on every silk rug.

Silk Fibers Snap When Wet

Wet silk loses up to 20% of its strength. Hot water extraction wands twist the fibers and break them. We never machine clean silk. It is hand washed in a flat bath.

Sun Damage Hides in Dirt

Silk that looks faded is often just dirty. A proper hand wash brings back 70 to 80% of the original sheen on most rugs we see. The shine returns once the grime lifts.

Fringes Tell the Truth

Yellow, knotted, broken fringes are the first thing a buyer or guest notices. We brush, wash and straighten every fringe by hand, knot by knot, before the rug leaves our shop.

Types of Silk Rugs We Hand Wash in NYC

Silk shows up in a lot of different rugs and each one has its own quirks. Below are the styles we clean every week. If your rug is not on this list, call us anyway. We have probably seen it.

Pure Silk Persian Rugs

Qum, Tabriz and Nain silks need a slow soak and zero agitation. We treat them like museum pieces. See our Persian rug cleaning service.

These are the trickiest. Wool wants a stronger wash, silk wants a soft one. We balance both. Often paired with our wool rug cleaning work.

Anything older than 50 years gets a stability test first. We check dyes, foundation and weave before water touches the rug. More on our antique rug cleaning page.

Hereke, Kashmir and fine Chinese silks. Tight knots, delicate pile. We groom in the direction of the weave. Pairs well with oriental rug cleaning.

Sold as silk, behaves nothing like it. Viscose browns the second it gets wet wrong. We use a dry compound method on these.

Newer silk rugs from designers and showrooms. Often dropped off through our area rug cleaning service.

What Makes Our Silk Cleaning Different in NYC

Most cleaners in the city use the same one method on every rug they touch. We do not. Here is what people actually get when they hire us for silk.

See the Difference After One Hand Wash

Photos do this job better than words. Below are real silk rugs we washed for real customers. Same rug, before and after, no filters. People are usually shocked at how much color comes back from a proper hand wash. The rug is still the rug. The dirt is just gone.

Our Hand Wash Process for Silk Rugs

Silk does not get the rough treatment. Here is exactly what happens to your rug from the moment we pick it up to the day it comes back to your floor.

Step 1

Free Pickup

We come to your door, roll the rug, and bring it to our shop the same day in most cases.

Step 2

Dry Dust Out

The rug is flipped and beaten on a duster. Up to a pound of fine dust falls out before any water.

Step 3

Dye Stability Test

We wet a hidden corner with our wash and watch for bleeding. No bleed, we move on.

Step 4

Hand Submersion Bath

Rug goes flat into a low pH organic bath. No machines, no spinning brushes, just hands.

Step 5

Soft Brush Grooming

We brush in the direction of the pile only, with horsehair tools made for silk.

Step 6

Triple Cold Rinse

Three cold rinses pull every trace of soap out of the fibers. Soap left behind ruins shine.

Step 7

Flat Air Dry

Rug dries flat on racks in a climate controlled room. Never hung, never heat dried.

Step 8

Fringe Hand Combing

Every fringe is washed, brushed and straightened by hand before the rug is rolled.
